Wiesbaden: Spa Elegance on the Edge of the Rhine-Main Region

Wiesbaden is the capital of the German state of Hesse and one of Europe's oldest spa towns — the name itself means "meadow baths." Fourteen of the city's original twenty-six hot springs still flow today, feeding thermal baths like the Kaiser-Friedrich-Therme and Thermalbad Aukammtal.

At the heart of the city stands the Kurhaus, a neoclassical building from 1907 whose casino inspired Dostoevsky's novel The Gambler, set beside the English-style Kurpark. The elegant Wilhelmstraße, the Neroberg hill reached by a historic funicular, and the Russian Orthodox Church round out a city that mixes Victorian architecture with a genuinely relaxed pace.
